Hoops recaps from Jan. 30 games (updated 2/1 with VF boys score)

Tuesday’s games (Jan. 30)
Girls
Oskaloosa 40, Jackson Heights 28
• The Bears pulled away in the second half to win by 12 and improve to 7-5. Junior Emily Heston scored 12 points in the win to lead Oskaloosa.

Troy 42, McLouth 26
• McLouth fell behind in the second quarter and couldn’t recover as Troy dropped the Bulldogs to 5-8. Junior Abby Annis led McLouth with 14 points.

Holton 54, Jefferson West 30
• Holton established a 19-4 lead after a quarter and coasted to the 24-point win. West dropped to 5-10. Junior Marcia Beecham led the Tigers with 8 points.

Wathena 52, Valley Falls 40
• Wathena inched away to some extent each quarter to win by 12 and drop Valley Falls to 4-10. Junior Rebekah Bunde led the Dragons with 10 points in the loss.

Doniphan West 46, JCN 42 (OT)
• North had a 4-point lead entering the fourth quarter but West forced overtime and got the win in the extra period. JCN moved to 4-10 with the loss. Freshman Mallory Grand Pre led JCN with 15 points and freshman Sara Navinskey added 10 in the loss.


Boys
Doniphan West 49, JCN 47
• North squandered a 10-point lead at the start of the second quarter by being outscored, 29-16, in the second half. Junior Luke Noll scored 15 points, senior Wes Weishaar scored 13 and senior Drew Kraxner scored 12 for North in the loss as the Chargers dropped to 8-5.

Holton 58, Jefferson West 56
• West came back from a 4-point halftime deficit to take a 1-point lead into the final quarter but couldn’t hold off the Wildcats. The Tigers dropped to 6-8. Junior Tom Shirley led the way for West with 28 points.

Troy 63, McLouth 51
• An 18-4 third quarter put it away for Troy as McLouth dropped to 5-7. Senior Andrew Booth led the Bulldogs with 15 points while senior Trevor Keling and junior Mike Rome scored 10 points each.

Jackson Heights 56, Oskaloosa 38
• Oskaloosa held an 11-point lead after a quarter but had lost it by halftime and was down by 12 entering the final quarter. The Bears moved to 2-10. Sophomore J.T. Thurston led Oskaloosa with 12 points.

Wathena 86, Valley Falls 44
Valley Falls was down, 28-6, after one quarter and couldn’t recover. The Dragons dropped to 0-13. Sophomore Ray Cook scored 14 points to lead the team in the loss.

Hoops recaps from Jan. 27

Saturday’s games (Jan. 27)
Girls
JCN Tourney
Seventh place
JCN 51, Maranatha 31
• JCN salvaged seventh place in the tournament to which it plays host as a 16-2 third quarter advantage put the game away. The Chargers moved to 4-9. Freshman Mallory Grand Pre scored 14 points and senior Tara Hammerschmidt scored 11 in the win.

Fifth place
Perry-Lecompton 37, Valley Falls 28
• A low-scoring game saw Perry-Lecompton establish a 6-point halftime lead and the Kaws held off the Dragons in the second half to move to 5-10. Valley Falls dropped to 4-9. Sophomore Ashleigh Allam scored 15 points to lead the Kaws while senior Katie Brevitz scored 15 for Valley Falls.

Third place
Oskaloosa 41, McLouth 31
• McLouth trimmed Oskaloosa’s 3-point halftime lead to 1 early in the second half but the Bears pulled away to take third at JCN and move to 6-5. The Bulldogs dropped to 5-7. Sophomore Nicole Rockhold led Oskaloosa with 11 points while McLouth was led by 11 points from senior Rachael Thompson.
