Jan. 11-20 county hoops update

Jan. 11 games


Girls

JCN 51, Valley Falls 39
• North pulled away in the fourth quarter to win by 12 and move to 6-1. Valley Falls dropped to 3-4. Weishaar hit six 3-pointers en route to 23 points while sophomore Sara Navinskey added 14 points for the Chargers. Junior Chelsy Lassiter led Valley Falls with 11 points.

Oskaloosa 43, Doniphan West 29
• The Bears took a 12-point halftime lead en route to the win in moving to 6-1. Rockhold led the way with 18 points.

Jefferson West 48, Sabetha 38 (OT)
• West came back from a 1-point fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime before pulling out the win to move to 4-3. Beecham led West with 12 points.

McLouth 67, Cair Paravel 38
• The Bulldogs ran to a 37-12 halftime lead before coasting to the win to improve to 3-3. Annis and sophomore Melissa Rome scored 20 points each with Shufflebarger scoring 12 in the win.

Perry-Lecompton 49, Immaculata 44
• The Kaws picked up the road win to move to 2-6.


Boys

Perry-Lecompton 62, Immaculata 41
• The Kaws cruised to the win to improve to 8-1.

Oskaloosa 56, Doniphan West 48
• The Bears improved to 5-2 with the win.

JCN 30, Valley Falls 24
• The Chargers held off the Dragons in a low-scoring game to move to 4-2. The Dragons dropped to 2-6. Noll led JCN with 10 points while sophomore Riley Bunde scored 10 points to lead the Dragons.

Sabetha 51, Jefferson West 35
• West dropped to 2-5 as Sabetha took a 12-point halftime lead and held on for the win. Senior Blake Ross and junior Cole Buckman scored 8 points each in the loss.

Cair Paravel 57, McLouth 53
• The Bulldogs dropped to 0-6 as the Lions held them off in the second half for the 4-point win. Rome scored 27 points with 16 rebounds in the loss.


Jan. 12 games


Girls

DVL Tournament

Championship
JCN 39, KC Christian 28
• The Chargers held the Panthers to 4 first-half points and turned a 14-point halftime lead into a league tournament title to improve to 7-1. Navinskey scored 18 points for JCN while Weishaar scored 9 in the win.

Fifth place
Oskaloosa 53, Doniphan West 36
• The Bears pulled away farther each quarter to get the win and move to 7-1. Rockhold scored 14 points while freshman Hailey Kelly scored 12 in the win.

Consolation
McLouth 47, Valley Falls 36
• The Bulldogs improved to 4-3 while Valley Falls dropped to 3-5.


Boys

DVL Tournament

Third place
Troy 35, JCN 27
• North trailed by only 1 at halftime but couldn’t keep pace in the second half in falling to 4-3. Senior Jared Brown led the Chargers with 12 points.

Fifth place
Horton 52, Oskaloosa 44
• Oskaloosa led by 3 at halftime but faltered in the second half to drop to 5-3. Senior Brock McGinnis scored 15 points for the Bears while senior Boone Heston scored 12.

Seventh place
Valley Falls 58, Jackson Heights 51
• The Dragons moved to 3-6 as they outscored Heights, 27-17, in the fourth quarter. Junior Ray Cook scored 22 points while Bunde scored 18 in the win.

Consolation
McLouth 76, Doniphan West 62
• The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season thanks to outscoring West, 48-34, in the second half. Senior Mark Stewart scored 25 points, Rome and senior Ryan Smith scored 15 each, junior Derrick Crouse scored 11 and sophomore Cole Batman scored 10 in the win. McLouth moved to 1-6.

First round

Girls
Lansing 48, Jefferson West 39
• The West girls dropped their opening round game to fall to 4-4.


Boys
Lansing 48, Jefferson West 46
• The West boys also lost in the first round of the tournament to fall to 2-6.


Jan. 15 games


Girls
Oskaloosa 51, Perry-Lecompton 41
• The Bears took an 11-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on to improve to 8-1. Perry-Lecompton dropped to 2-7. Junior Nicole Rockhold led Oskaloosa with 16 points while senior Holly Fornelli led the Kaws with 10 points.


Boys

McLouth Tourney
First round
Perry-Lecompton 52, McLouth 41
• The Kaws took a 9-point halftime lead and coasted to the win to move to 9-1. McLouth dropped to 1-7. Junior Andy Bowman led the Kaws with 19 points while senior Mike Rome led McLouth with 18 points.

Oskaloosa 47, ACCHS 45
• Oskaloosa was down by 5 points entering the fourth quarter but came back to outscore the Tigers, 16-9, to win the game and move to 6-3. Junior J.T. Thurston scored 15 points and senior Brock McGinnis scored 13 in the win for the Bears.

JCN 41, Maranatha 29
• The Chargers moved to 5-3 as they pulled away in the fourth quarter to move into the semifinals. Senior Luke Noll scored 16 points while junior Riley Noll added 11 points in the win.

Valley Falls 55, Bishop Seabury 22
• The Dragons cruised to the win to move to 4-6. Junior Ray Cook scored 16 points in the win.


Jan. 18 games

JCN 52, ACCHS 49
• North improved to 8-1 with the win.

• The West girls moved into the fifth place game with the win to improve to 5-4.


Boys

• West took the narrow loss to fall to 2-7 and into the seventh place game.

Semifinals
Perry-Lecompton 53, JCN 38
• The Kaws took a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter and watched JCN whittle it to 6 before putting the Chargers away to move to 10-1. JCN dropped to 5-4. Perry-Lecompton was led by 16 points from junior Joel Gantz, 15 points from junior Kyle Morgison and 11 points from Bowman. JCN was led by 13 points from Riley Noll and 11 points from Luke Noll.

Oskaloosa 71, Valley Falls 55
• Oskaloosa built a 23-point lead entering the fourth quarter en route to the win to move to 7-3. The Dragons dropped to 4-7. McGinnis scored 22 points while junior Chase Tenpenny scored 12 points and senior Boone Heston scored 11 points for Oskaloosa. Valley Falls was led by 20 points from senior Cameron Bickford.

Consolation semis
Maranatha 47, McLouth 44
• McLouth took a 10-point lead into the second quarter, was down 2 at halftime and got outscored, 24-23, in the second half to drop to 1-8. Rome led the Bulldogs with 17 points in the loss while senior Mark Stewart scored 14.

Fifth place
Jefferson West 46, Rossville 30
• The Tigers finished fifth in the tournament and improved to 6-4 with the victory.


Boys

Seventh place
Tonganoxie 62, Jefferson West 51
• West trailed by 14 at halftime and couldn’t come back in falling to 2-8. Senior Tom Shirley scored 21 points in the loss.


McLouth Tourney
Championship
Perry-Lecompton 55, Oskaloosa 51
• Oskaloosa led by 3 entering the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on as the Kaws won the tourney and moved to 11-1. Oskaloosa fell to 7-4. Junior Shane Gimzo led Perry-Lecompton with 20 points while Gantz added 12. Oskaloosa was led by 17 points from McGinnis, 16 points from Thurston and 10 points from Tenpenny.

Third place
JCN 50, Valley Falls 28
• The Chargers defeated Valley Falls for the third time this season to improve to 6-4. Valley Falls dropped to 4-8. Senior Chris Noll scored 14 points to lead JCN while sophomore Riley Bunde scored 9 for Valley Falls.

Seventh place
McLouth 60, Bishop Seabury 29
• The Bulldogs ended the tournament on a good note to improve to 2-8. Rome scored 17 points, sophomore Cole Batman scored 15 points and Stewart scored 12 in the win.
