Hayden 77, Jefferson West 44
• Once again the Tigers’ season ended at the hands of Hayden as the Wildcats took an 8-point lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back. West finished at 9-13. Junior Tom Shirley led West with 14 points and 9 rebounds while seniors Derek Helton and Brock Anderson had 10 points each in the loss.

Two teams still alive in substate play
The Jefferson West and McLouth boys' basketball teams are the only county teams to advance past the first round in substate. West is set to play second seed Hayden at 6 p.m. Thursday at the 4A substate in Hiawatha. McLouth will play top seed and defending 3A champs Maur Hill at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the 3A substate at Benedictine College in Atchison.

Hayden 55, Jefferson West 25
• Hayden ran to a 29-13 halftime lead en route to ending West’s season at 7-15. Junior Nichelle Palmateer scored 6 points to lead the Tigers.
Royal Valley 46, Perry-Lecompton 37
• The Kaws were down only 2 going into the fourth quarter but couldn’t pull off the upset in ending the season at 5-16. Sophomore Ashleigh Allam and junior Katie Davis scored 8 points each to lead Perry-Lecompton.
2A substate quarterfinals
St. Marys 56, Valley Falls 39
• The Dragons led by 6 after one quarter but got outscored, 34-14, in the second and third quarters on the way to a season-ending loss. Valley Falls finished at 6-16. Junior Rebekah Bunde scored 16 points and senior Katie Brevitz scored 10 to lead the Dragons.

Pleasant Ridge 65, JCN 52
• Ridge led by 4 at halftime and pulled away in the second half to end JCN’s season at 12-9. Senior Wes Weishaar finished his high school career with a 16-point effort, as did fellow senior Daniel Finley.
McLouth 42, Horton 38
• McLouth came back from a 9-point deficit entering the second quarter to win with a 16-9 advantage in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs moved to 9-11 and moved on to face Maur Hill in the substate semifinals. Senior Lance Lamborn led the Bulldogs with 10 points.
Maur Hill 82, Oskaloosa 47
• A 34-8 first quarter advantage for Maur Hill put Oskaloosa on its way to the loss to end the Bears’ season at 3-18. Sophomore J.T. Thurston scored 12 points, junior Boone Heston scored 11 and junior Derek Brey scored 10 in the loss.

• KCC took a 13-2 lead after a quarter and didn’t look back in ending McLouth’s season at 8-13. Senior Rachael Thompson led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

No countians place at state wrestling
All six county high school wrestlers who competed in state tournament action Friday and Saturday in Salina and Hays failed to place in the top five of their respective weight class.
At Class 4A state in Salina, Perry-Lecompton freshman John Mehl lost by a 19-5 score to a wrestler from Russell in the first round of the 103-lb. class and, in the consolation bracket, lost, 10-8, to a wrestler from Abilene to get eliminated Friday. Jefferson West junior Nathan Martin lost by a score of 7-0 in the first round of the 112-lb. class to a wrestler from Rose Hill and was defeated by the same score in the consolation bracket by a wrestler from Pratt Friday.
West junior Dylan Mumaw lost his first-round match in the 125-lb. class by a 4-3 score to a wrestler from Circle and defaulted his consolation match versus a wrestler from Paola. West freshman Steven Skaggs won his first-round match by pinfall over a wrestler from Andover Central but was pinned by a wrestler from Chapman in the quarterfinals before losing by pinfall in the consolation bracket to a wrestler from Goodland.
At 3-2-1A state in Hays, Oskaloosa senior David Williams lost his first-round match, 17-2, to a wrestler from Beloit in the 125-lb. class, bounced back to win his first consolation match by pinfall versus a wrestler from Chase County and then lost in the consolation quarterfinals Saturday by pinfall to a wrestler from Norton. Junior Zach Beach lost his first match at 145 lbs., 13-4, to a wrestler from Hillsboro and then was pinned in his ensuing consolation match Friday by a wrestler from Ellis.

• The Dragons held a 1-point halftime lead and made it stick in finishing the regular season at 6-15. Senior Katie Brevitz scored 17 points and junior Rebekah Bunde scored 10 in the win.

• Immaculata led after the first quarter and didn’t let up in dropping the Kaws to a 5-15 final regular season mark. Sophomore Ashleigh Allam scored 10 points to lead the Kaws.

• Perry-Lecompton came back from a 5-point deficit entering the second quarter to lead by 5 at the half, but the Raiders outscored the Kaws, 44-33, in the second half to drop PLHS to 12-8 to finish the regular season. Junior Caleb Denton scored 15 points and sophomore Joel Gantz scored 10 in the loss for the Kaws.
Atchison 58, JCN 52
• JCN led the Class 4A ranked Redmen by 2 at halftime but got outscored, 12-2, in the third quarter en route to the loss to finish the regular season at 12-8. Senior Wes Weishaar scored 33 points and senior Drew Kraxner scored 11 in the loss.

• McLouth trailed by 4 after one quarter and the deficit kept growing as the Bulldogs finished the regular season with an 8-11 record. Senior Trevor Keling scored 12 points for McLouth, as did junior Mike Rome, and senior Andrew Booth scored 11 in the loss.
Oskaloosa 62, Pleasant Ridge 57
• The Bears finished the season on a good note by defeating the Rams to move to 3-17.
