The Oskaloosa and Perry-Lecompton high school football teams had short post-season runs as both lost Tuesday in bi-district playoff action.
The Bears were shut out, 19-0, by Rossville in Rossville to end the season at 5-5 in 3A action.
In 4A action in Perry, the host Kaws had a 21-14 fourth-quarter lead but Marysville fought back to score with 6:23 left in the game and ran a successful fake on an extra-point kick for a 2-point conversion that made the difference in a 22-21 Bulldog win. The Kaws' season ended at 8-2.

Week 9 high school football update
Week 9 games (Oct. 25)
Perry-Lecompton 31, Atchison 7
• The Kaws went to Atchison and came home district champions to finish the regular season 8-1 and qualify for the 4A bi-district playoffs. The Kaws scored on a 6-yard run from junior Kyle Morgison, a 22-yard interception return by senior Dillon Harrell, a 28-yard pass from junior Shane Gimzo to junior Joel Gantz and a 51-yard Gimzo run. Junior Neng Artwichai added a 24-yard field goal and 4 extra-point kicks. Gimzo ran 18 times for 112 yards and was 6-for-16 passing for 104 yards. The Kaws were set to play host to Marysville Tuesday night for a bi-district game.
Oskaloosa 54, McLouth 20
• Oskaloosa locked up a 3A bi-district playoff spot by drubbing McLouth in McLouth. The Bears moved to 5-4 while McLouth finished the season at 1-8. Oskaloosa senior Boone Heston scored on runs of 1 and 31 yards and also connected with junior Chase Tenpenny on a 53-yard TD pass. Junior Trent Newell added TD runs of a 41 and 15 yards, senior Brandon Hawks scored on a 13-yard run and junior Lakota Coffman scored on a 23-yard run. The Bears added 2-point conversion runs from Hawks, sophomore Brandon Barnes and two from Heston as well as two extra-point kicks from freshman Adam Bowser. McLouth scored on a 4-yard run by junior Derrick Crouse, a 15-yard run by senior Kent Sparks and an 82-yard kick return by senior Mark Stewart. Crouse and Stewart connected for a 2-point conversion pass. The Bears were set to travel to Rossville Tuesday for a bi-district playoff game.
Jefferson West 20, Tonganoxie 14
• West ended its season on a good note by defeating Tonganoxie to finish 4-5. Junior Garrett Stewart scored on a 1-yard run and got the game-winning score on a 29-yard fumble return. Junior Kyle Sanders and senior Charlie Smith also connected for a 2-yard TD pass. Stewart added a 2-point conversion run.
Silver Lake 54, JCN 3
• The Chargers wrapped the season at 2-7 as Lake built a 47-0 lead entering the fourth quarter and coasted to the win. North’s only score came on a 37-yard field goal by senior Vince Foulk.
Wathena 26, Valley Falls 0
• The Dragons were shut out to finish the season at 4-5.

North has short run at 3A state tourney
The Jefferson County North High School volleyball team made the trek to Salina Friday for the 3A state tournament but enjoyed only a short run by going 1-2 in pool play.
The Chargers played the first game of the day in pool II versus second seed Hutchinson-Trinity and lost, 25-17, 25-17. Three matches later they faced third seed Silver Lake and lost, 25-15, 25-14, to be eliminated from semifinal contention. They finished the day’s 3A action by defeating Jayhawk Linn, 23-25, 25-18, 25-19, to end the season at 29-13.
Brees places fifth among 4A CC girls
Three countians ran at the 4-1A state cross-country meet in Wamego Saturday and Jefferson West freshman Taryn Brees came away with the best finish of the three by placing fifth in the 4A girls’ race.
Brees ran a time of 15:35.73 to place fifth in the race and was less than a minute behind the individual champion from Baldwin. She was third among non-seniors in the race.
In the 3A boys’ race, Jefferson County North junior Riley Noll placed 52nd in 19:11.84 while fellow Charger senior Spencer Wilson placed 68th in 19:38.13.
