Feb. 15 hoops recaps (updated 2/19 with McLouth scores)

Thursday’s games (Feb. 15)
Girls
KC Christian 61, Oskaloosa 48
• KCC gradually pulled away for the 13-point win to drop Oskaloosa to 8-9. Senior Carol Allen scored 15 points and sophomore Nicole Rockhold added 12 in the loss for the Bears.

Doniphan West 43, McLouth 19
• McLouth was down, 16-4, after one quarter and never got back into the game in dropping to 6-11. Freshman Kylie Shufflebarger led the Bulldogs with 8 points in the loss.

Jefferson West 34, MHMA 29
• West improved to 7-12 with the narrow win over Maur Hill Mount Academy.

Valley Falls 35, Troy 33
• A 14-1 second quarter in Troy’s favor put the Dragons down by 12 but a 17-6 fourth quarter in Valley Falls’ favor got the Dragons the win to move to 5-13. Junior Rebekah Bunde scored 13 to lead the Dragons.

Lansing 61, Perry-Lecompton 40
• Lansing led by only 1 at halftime but blew out the Kaws in the second half to drop Perry-Lecompton to 5-14. Junior Holly Fornelli scored 12 points to lead the Kaws.

Boys
Perry-Lecompton 50, Lansing 49
• The Kaws squeaked out the 1-point win to move to 12-7.

Doniphan West 60, McLouth 52
• The Bulldogs fell to 7-9 with the loss.


Maur Hill 61, Jefferson West 27
• The Tigers were outscored, 38-15, in the second and third quarters en route to dropping to 8-10. Junior Tom Shirley led West with 6 points.

KC Christian 49, Oskaloosa 48
• The game was tied at halftime but the Bears put together a 3-point lead entering the fourth quarter. KCC came back to win by 1 to drop the Bears to 2-15. Sophomore Chase Tenpenny scored 16 points and junior Brock McGinnis scored 10 points in the loss for Oskaloosa.

Troy 57, Valley Falls 50
• Valley Falls had a 4-point halftime lead but lost the game in the fourth quarter to drop to 0-17. Junior Cameron Bickford and freshman Mitchell Streeter scored 15 points each to lead the Dragons.

OHS has two champs at DVL wrestling meet

Two Oskaloosa High School wrestlers won individual titles Saturday at the Delaware Valley League meet in Horton.

David Williams was first in the 125-lb. class at the meet while Adam Engelken was first in the 112-lb. class. Three Bears placed second – Zach Beach at 145 lbs., Lutz Chrobok at 171 lbs. and Larsen Stevenson at 215 lbs. Brandon Barnes placed third at 152-lbs.

OKWC competes at Kansas City, Holton

The Oskaloosa Kids Wrestling Club had 10 members compete in the Turner Open tournament in Kansas City on Saturday.

Second place finishers at the open were Triston Hopkins in the age 6 and under 49-lb. class and Justin Cross in the 8 and under 95-lb. class. Third place winners were Kyle Hopkins in the 8 and under 73-lb. class, Dalton VanHoutan in the 10 and under 82-lb. class and Dakota Cop in the 12 and under 105-lb. class. Nicholas Courtney placed fourth in the 8 and under 49-lb. class. Participation recognition also went to Hunter Evans, Dillion Grother, Tegan Bowers and Jessica Coffman.

OKWC had seven wrestlers attend the Holton Novice on Sunday. All seven received placement medals. Jared Miller took first in the 6 and under 58-lb. class. Second place winners were Jerod Shufflebarger in the 6 and under 49-lb. class and Cole Murphree in the 10 and under 55-lb. class. Third place finishers were Brandon Pentlin in the 6 and under 88-lb. class, Brody Troupe in the 8 and under 64-lb. class, Wyatt Troupe in the 10 and under 90-lb. class and Jason Warden in the 10 and under 82-lb. class.

Doniphan West 52, Oskaloosa 48
• West pulled away from a halftime tie to win by 4. The Bears dropped to 8-8. Sophomore Nicole Rockhold scored 14 points and senior Lindsey Ottensmeier scored 13 in the loss.

Boys
Doniphan West 58, Oskaloosa 51
• Oskaloosa trailed by 9 at halftime but closed the gap to 3 entering the final quarter. The Mustangs were able to hold on for the win to drop Oskaloosa to 2-14. Junior Brock McGinnis scored 19 points and sophomore Chase Tenpenny scored 11 for the Bears.
