Feb. 22 hoops recaps

Thursday’s games (Feb. 22)
Boys
JCN 42, Horton 41 (OT)
• The lead see-sawed between the teams from quarter to quarter before the Chargers outscored Horton, 5-4, in overtime to win and move to 12-7. Senior Wes Weishaar scored 13 points and senior Drew Kraxner added 12 in the win.

Girls
Horton 52, JCN 36
• Horton opened a 15-point halftime lead and held off JCN in the second half to drop the Chargers to 6-14. Sophomore Lisa Weishaar led JCN with 13 points.

Substate pairings for county hoops squads

Here's a list of the first-round pairings for county teams in substate play when it begins Monday. All the first round games are at 7 p.m. and are played at the higher seed's site. Subsequent games will be played at the substate host site.

Class 4A -- Hiawatha substate

Boys game Monday
(6 seed) Jefferson West at (3) Perry-Lecompton. Winner plays the winner of (7) Royal Valley at (2) Hayden Thursday night.

Girls games Tuesday
(7) Perry-Lecompton at (2) Royal Valley.
(6) Jefferson West at (3) Hayden. The winners of those two games play each other Friday.


Class 3A -- Atchison (Maur Hill) substate

Boys games Tuesday
(8) Oskaloosa at (1) Maur Hill.
(5) Horton at (4) McLouth.
(6) Pleasant Ridge at (3) JCN. The winners of the McLouth and Oskaloosa games will play each other while the winner of the JCN game will play the winner of (7) ACCHS at (2) KC Christian Friday.

Girls games Monday
(7) JCN at (2) ACCHS.
(6) McLouth at (3) KC Christian.
(5) Oskaloosa at (4) Horton. The winners of the JCN and McLouth games will play each other while the winner of the Oskaloosa game will play the winner of (8) Maur Hill-Mount Academy at (1) Pleasant Ridge Thursday.


Class 2A -- Jackson Heights substate

Boys game Monday
(8) Valley Falls at (1) Jackson Heights. The winner plays the winner of (5) Lyndon at (4) Maranatha Thursday.

Girls game Tuesday
(5) Valley Falls at (4) St. Marys. The winner plays the winner of (8) Maranatha at (1) Wathena Friday.

OKWC competes at Marysville, Topeka

Members of the Oskaloosa Kids Wrestling Club competed over the weekend in Marysville and Topeka.

The club had three members travel to the Marysville open tournament Saturday. Tegan Bowers placed second in the age 8 and under 95-lb. class, Dalton VanHoutan placed second in the 8 and under 73-lb. class and Dusty Bammes placed fourth in the 10 and under 67-lb. class.


Thirteen members from OKWC traveled to Topeka Sunday and participated in the Junior Viking novice tournament. The five first place winners were Triston Hopkins in the 6 and under 49-lb. class, Jerod Shufflebarger in the 6 and under 49-lb. class, Jared Miller in the 6 and under 58-lb. class, Zach Harvey in the 6 and under 70-lb. class, and Ben Harvey in the 8 and under 80-lb. class.


Second place winners were Thaine Berends in the 6 and under 46-lb. class, Easton Weems in the 6 and under 46-lb. class and Cole Murphree in the 10 and under 55-lb. class. Third place winners were Brandon Pentlin in the 6 and under 88-lb. class and Brody Troupe in the 8 and under 64-lb. class. Jaxson Webb was fourth in the 6 and under 55-lb. class. Fifth place finishers were Toby Berends in the 8 and under 61-lb. class and Jason Warden in the 10 and under 82-lb. class.

Feb. 20 hoops recaps

Tuesday’s games (Feb. 20)
Girls
Oskaloosa 56, Horton 50
• The Bears took a 1-point lead into the fourth quarter and locked down the win to move to 9-10. Sophomore Nicole Rockhold scored 22 points and senior Carol Allen scored 12 for Oskaloosa.

McLouth 46, Valley Falls 40
• McLouth pulled away in the second half to win and improve to 7-12. Valley Falls dropped to 5-15. Freshman Missy Rome scored 16 points while junior Abby Annis added 13 and freshman Kylie Shufflebarger scored 12 for McLouth. Junior Rebekah Bunde scored 16 points to lead Valley Falls.

Holton 56, Jefferson West 32
• Holton took a 37-20 lead into halftime en route to dropping West to a regular-season-ending record of 7-14. Senior Tracy Naumann led West with 8 points.

JCN 50, Jackson Heights 38
• North pulled away in the second half to win and move to 6-13. Sophomore Lisa Weishaar scored 16 points and freshman Sara Navinskey added 15 in the win.

Boys
JCN 56, Jackson Heights 53
• North was down 2 at halftime but came back to lead by 5 entering the fourth quarter before holding off the Cobras to move to 11-7. Senior Wes Weishaar scored 17 points, senior Drew Kraxner added 14, junior Luke Noll scored 12 and senior Daniel Finley scored 10 for the Chargers.

McLouth def. Valley Falls, score n/a
• The Bulldogs improved to 8-10 while Valley Falls fell to 0-19.

Holton 49, Jefferson West 47
• West took a 1-point lead into halftime but let the game slip away in the second half to finish the regular season at 8-12. Junior Tom Shirley scored 22 points and senior Derek Helton added 11 in the loss.

Horton 46, Oskaloosa 40
• Oskaloosa had a 1-point lead going into the fourth quarter but couldn’t hang on as they dropped to 2-17. Sophomore Chase Tenpenny scored 15 points and junior Brock McGinnis scored 10 in the loss for Oskaloosa.

Saturday’s games (Feb. 17)
Girls
Jackson Heights 37, Valley Falls 26
• The Dragons were behind, 19-6, at halftime and couldn’t recover in dropping to 5-14. Junior Rebekah Bunde led Valley Falls with 10 points.

Boys
Jackson Heights 79, Valley Falls 50
• Heights was ahead, 32-9, after the first quarter and didn’t look back in dropping the Dragons to 0-18. Sophomore Ray Cook led the Dragons with 21 points while senior Daniel Nottingham scored 15 in the loss.


Monday’s games (Feb. 12)
Girls
KC Christian 50, McLouth 20
• McLouth was down, 28-2, at halftime in dropping to 6-12. Freshman Missy Rome led the Bulldogs with 10 points.

Sabetha 39, Jefferson West 36
• West held a 6-point lead entering the final quarter but couldn’t hold on in dropping to 7-13. Junior Nichelle Palmateer led the Tigers with 14 points.

Boys
KC Christian 70, McLouth 49
• KCC pulled away somewhat each quarter to drop McLouth to 7-10. Senior Andrew Booth scored 19 points and junior Mike Rome scored 11 in the loss for McLouth.

Sabetha 67, Jefferson West 46
• West trailed by 15 after one quarter en route to the 21-point loss to fall to 8-11. Junior Tom Shirley scored 16 points and senior Brock Anderson scored 11 in the loss.

Six county wrestlers bound for state meets

Six county high school wrestlers qualified over the weekend for Friday and Saturday’s state tournaments.

Perry-Lecompton freshman John Mehl will join Jefferson West’s Nathan Martin, a junior, Dylan Mumaw, a junior, and Steven Skaggs, a freshman, at the 4A state meet at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. Mehl will take a 28-11 record into the 103-lb. class; Martin will take a 20-14 record into the 112-lb. class; Mumaw will take a 29-4 record into the 125-lb. class; and Skaggs will take a 25-11 record into the 171-lb. class.


Oskaloosa will send two wrestlers to 3-2-1A state at Busch-Gross Coliseum in Hays. Senior David Williams will take a 30-6 record into the 125-lb. class there and junior Zach Beach will take a 30-8 record into the 145-lb. class. It will mark the third trip to state for Williams and the first for Beach.

Feb. 16 hoops recaps

Friday’s games (Feb. 16)
Boys
JCN 49, Oskaloosa 41
• JCN held off Oskaloosa and junior Brock McGinnis to win a close-fought game. The Chargers moved to 10-7 while Oskaloosa fell to 2-16. JCN was led by 19 points and 5 rebounds from senior Drew Kraxner and 17 points and 6 rebounds from senior Wes Weishaar. Oskaloosa was led by 20 points and 8 rebounds from McGinnis.

Girls
JCN 44, Oskaloosa 36
• JCN avenged a previous loss to Oskaloosa by taking a 14-point halftime lead and holding on to win and move to 5-13. Oskaloosa dropped to 8-10. JCN was led by 15 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Mallory Grand Pre and 10 points and 4 steals from sophomore Amelia Noll.

NOTE: The remainder of county games were postponed or cancelled because of the winter weather conditions.
