State wrestling qualifiers

Oskaloosa senior wrestler Zach Beach earned a return trip to the state tournament by placing in the 160-lb. division at regionals Friday and Saturday in Rossville.

With the fourth-place finish, Beach moves on to state Friday and Saturday at Hays. Adam Engleken, Dusty Kitchen and Bobby Hopkins also competed for Oskaloosa. Engelken missed going to state by one place.

Seven Jefferson West wrestlers and four Perry-Lecompton wrestlers are also bound for state in Salina after the 4A regional in Perry. The Tigers finished second as a team in the regional behind champion Clay Center. Perry-Lecompton was sixth as a team.

West senior Dylan Mumaw continued an undefeated season in the 135-lb. class as he was named co-outstanding wrestler at the regional tournament. Senior Austin Lee also captured an individual title at 152 lbs. while freshman Cass Steele did the same at 103 lbs. Junior Zach Reeb was runner-up at 140 lbs. to qualify for state while freshman Clint Lee was third at 125 lbs. Senior Brandon Langston was fourth at 145 lbs. and freshman Ethan Mumaw was fourth at 160 lbs. to also earn a trip to Salina.

Perry-Lecompton was led by a second-place finish by Colton Miller at 125 lbs. Alex Hackathorn won by default for third in the heavyweight division while John Mehl was fourth at 112 lbs. and Jacob Callahan was fourth at 130 lbs.

Girls

JCN 65, Bishop Seabury 12
• The Chargers led, 26-4, after one quarter and coasted to the win to improve to 12-2. Sophomore Mallory GrandPre scored 12 points while junior Amelia Noll scored 11 and sophomore Sara Navinskey scored 10.

Immaculata 43, Oskaloosa 38
• The Bears fell to 11-4 with the loss.

McLouth 46, Troy 41
• The Bulldogs outscored Troy, 31-23, in the second half to improve to 8-6. Sophomore Melissa Rome scored 23 points and sophomore Kylie Shufflebarger added 10 points in the win.


Boys

Oskaloosa 58, Immaculata 54
• The Bears moved to 10-5 with the win.

JCN 68, Bishop Seabury 39
• The Chargers improved to 8-5 with the win.

Troy 56, McLouth 45
• The Bulldogs fell to 4-10 with the loss. Senior Mike Rome scored 16 points for McLouth.


Feb. 8 games


Girls

JCN 60, Pleasant Ridge 45
• The Chargers blew open what was a 5-point lead entering the fourth quarter to win and improve to 13-2. Junior Lisa Weishaar scored 20 points while Amelia Noll scored 12 and GrandPre scored 10 for North.

Oskaloosa 47, Maranatha 15
• Oskaloosa led by 20 at halftime en route to the easy win to move to 12-4. Junior Nicole Rockhold and freshman Hailey Kelly led the Bears with 16 points each.

Jefferson West 37, Hiawatha 18
• West pulled away each quarter to win by 19 and improve to 10-5. Junior Hayley Hypse scored 10 points to lead West.

McLouth 62, Horton 52
• The Bulldogs got the win to improve to 9-6. Rome scored 31 points in the victory.

Valley Falls 48, Doniphan West 43
• Valley Falls led by only 1 at halftime but outscored West, 20-16, in the second half to get the win and improve to 6-8. Freshman Abbey Kearney scored 27 points while senior Rebekah Bunde scored 11 in the win for the Dragons.

Piper 57, Perry-Lecompton 13
• The Kaws dropped to 3-12 with the loss.


Boys

Perry-Lecompton 39, Piper 38
• The Kaws squeaked past Piper to improve to 16-1.

Valley Falls 61, Doniphan West 36
• The Dragons pulled away each quarter to win by 25 and move to 5-10. Junior Ray Cook scored 17 points, senior Cameron Bickford scored 11 points and sophomore Riley Bunde scored 10 points for the Dragons in the win.

Horton 63, McLouth 55
• The Bulldogs fell to 4-11 with the loss.

Hiawatha 42, Jefferson West 39
• The Tigers took a late lead after trailing by 8 at halftime but couldn’t hold on as the Red Hawks got the win to drop West to 3-12. Senior Tom Shirley scored 14 points and senior Hank Wulfekoetter scored 13 in the loss.

Girls

JCN 39, Doniphan West 35
• The Chargers came back from a 7-point halftime deficit to win and improve to 14-2. Amelia Noll scored 12 points and Weishaar added 11 in the win.

Holton 60, Jefferson West 22
• West trailed, 21-4, after one quarter en route to dropping to 10-6. Senior Emily Starr scored 10 points in the loss.

Boys

Wathena 54, Valley Falls 53 (OT)
• In a see-saw game, the Dragons trailed by 2 at halftime but led by 4 entering the fourth quarter. Wathena forced overtime and outscored Valley Falls, 2-1, in extra time to win. Kearney scored 22 points and Bunde scored 13 in the loss for the Dragons.

• JCN came back from a 5-point halftime deficit but couldn’t get the win in dropping to 14-3. Junior Amelia Noll scored 16 points to lead North.

Oskaloosa 48, KC Christian 40
• The Bears got the win at KCC to improve to 13-4. Freshman Hailey Kelly scored 23 points in the win.

Royal Valley 46, Jefferson West 36
• The Tigers fell to 10-7 as Royal Valley pulled away in the fourth quarter to win by 10. Senior Marcia Beecham led West with 15 points.

McLouth 42, Doniphan West 27
• The Bulldogs improved to 10-6 with the win. Sophomore Melissa Rome scored 27 for McLouth.

Valley Falls 46, Troy 29
• The Dragons outscored Troy, 31-12, in the second half to improve to 7-9. Freshman Abbey Kearney was the lone Dragon in double figures with 24 points.

• West took a 17-0 lead after one quarter and didn’t look back in moving to 4-13. Senior Tom Shirley scored 18 points while sophomore Alex Baker added 10 points in the win.

• The Kaws were outscored, 13-3, in the fourth quarter en route to the loss to fall to 3-13. Sophomore Katie Hirsch led the Kaws with 12 points.


Boys

Perry-Lecompton 71, Immaculata 69
• The Kaws kept rolling at 17-1 with the win. Junior Andy Bowman scored 19 points, junior Kyle Morgison scored 17 and junior Shane Gimzo scored 11 in the win.

Girls

JCN 56, Oskaloosa 40
• The Chargers rolled to the win to improve to 15-3. Oskaloosa fell to 13-5. Amelia Noll scored 13 points while sophomore Mallory GrandPre scored 12 and sophomore Sara Navinskey scored 11 in the win for JCN. Oskaloosa was led by 8 points from senior Emily Heston.

McLouth 36, KC Christian 35
• The Bulldogs outscored KCC, 16-7, in the fourth quarter to win and improve to 11-6. Rome scored 16 points to lead McLouth.

Jefferson West 48, Nemaha Valley 39
• West pulled away in the third quarter and held on to improve to 11-7. Junior Hayley Hypse scored 13 points to lead the Tigers.

Valley Falls 41, Jackson Heights 24
• Valley Falls led by 13 at halftime en route to the win to improve to 8-9. Kearney scored 22 points in the win.


Boys

Oskaloosa 58, JCN 48
• The Bears improved to 11-7 with the win while North dropped to 10-7. Junior J.T. Thurston scored 17 for Oskaloosa while junior Chase Tenpenny scored 11 and senior Brock McGinnis scored 10. JCN was led by 18 points from junior Riley Noll.

Valley Falls 64, Jackson Heights 51
• The Dragons led by 14 entering the fourth quarter and held on to improve to 6-12. Sophomore Riley Bunde scored 19 points while seniors Alan Brown and Cameron Bickford scored 11 each for the Dragons.

KC Christian 53, McLouth 47
• The Bulldogs dropped to 5-12 as they couldn’t recover from a 5-point halftime deficit. Rome scored 16 points while junior Derrick Crouse scored 11 and Batman scored 10.

Nemaha Valley 62, Jefferson West 37
• West dropped to 4-14. Shirley was the lone Tiger in double figures with 13 points.

Girls

St. James Academy 52, JCN 41
• North dropped to 15-4. GrandPre scored 12 points and Navinskey scored 10 in the loss.

Boys

St. James Academy 42, JCN 25
• North was outscored, 27-11, in the second half in falling to 10-8. Senior Luke Noll led the Chargers with 7 points.


Feb. 18 games


Girls

Oskaloosa 67, Wathena 34
• Two quarters of 20-point scoring made the difference as Oskaloosa picked up the win to move to 14-5. Junior Nicole Rockhold scored 27 points while Kelly added 18 points and Emily Heston scored 10 for the Bears.

McLouth 64, Pleasant Ridge 48
• McLouth pulled away in the fourth quarter to get a relatively easy win and improve to 12-6. Rome scored 21 points while senior Abby Annis scored 16 and senior Samantha Farris scored 10.

Horton 47, Valley Falls 38
• The Dragons fell to 8-10 as Horton took a 25-16 halftime lead and held on. Senior Rebekah Bunde scored 22 points for Valley Falls.


Boys

Wathena 62, Oskaloosa 53
• The Bears couldn’t hold on to a 3-point halftime lead in falling to 11-8. McGinnis led the Bears with 19 points while Thurston scored 15 and Tenpenny added 11.

Horton 59, Valley Falls 40
• Valley Falls led by 1 at halftime but got outscored, 39-19, in the second half to fall to 6-13. Junior Ray Cook scored 17 points while Bunde added 13 in the loss.

Pleasant Ridge 53, McLouth 44
• The Bulldogs dropped to 5-13 with the loss. Senior Mark Stewart scored 19 points while senior Ryan Smith scored 14 for McLouth.
