OKWC hosts open tourney

The Oskaloosa Kids Wrestling Club played host to a home open tournament Feb. 25 at the Oskaloosa High School. Twenty-three area clubs were represented with 283 entries and approximately over 600 in attendance.

OKWC had 30 of its members compete and 22 received placement medals.

First place winners were: Jared Miller 6U 58, Jerod Shufflebarger 6 U 49, Brandon Pentlin 6 U 88, and Dalton VanHoutan 8 U 73.


Second place winners were: Easton Weems 6 U 46, Triston Hopkins 6 U, 49, Zach Harvey 6 U 70, Kyle Hopkins 8 U 73, Ben Harvey 8 U 80, Will Brinkley 10 U 58, Shane Adams 10 U 64, Dusty Bammes 10 U 67, and Dakota Cop 12 U 105.


Third place winners were: Keaton Bassett 6 U 46, Justin Cross 8 U 95,Kelsey Willits 10 U 64, and Wyatt Troupe 10 U 90.


Fourth Place winners were: Toby Berends 8 U 58, Tegan Bowers 8 U 95 and Jason Warden 10 U 79. Participation recognition goes to Thaine Berends, Colby Peck, Nicholas Courtney, Carter Claxton, Dillion Grother, Brody Troupe, Jessica Coffman, and Daniel Rhodes.

McLouth also deep-sixed in substate semis

• Maur Hill led, 19-4, after one quarter and ran away with the game to end McLouth’s season at 9-12. McLouth senior Andrew Booth capped his high school career with a 14-point game to lead the Bulldogs.

Jeff West falls in substate semis

• Once again the Tigers’ season ended at the hands of Hayden as the Wildcats took an 8-point lead after the first quarter and didn’t look back. West finished at 9-13. Junior Tom Shirley led West with 14 points and 9 rebounds while seniors Derek Helton and Brock Anderson had 10 points each in the loss.

Two teams still alive in substate play

The Jefferson West and McLouth boys' basketball teams are the only county teams to advance past the first round in substate. West is set to play second seed Hayden at 6 p.m. Thursday at the 4A substate in Hiawatha. McLouth will play top seed and defending 3A champs Maur Hill at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the 3A substate at Benedictine College in Atchison.
