Oskaloosa, McLouth teams trade sweeps

The Oskaloosa baseball team and McLouth softball team each swept their counterpart as the two rival county schools matched off Monday.

The Bears baseball team defeated the Bulldogs, 3-2 and 12-9, behind the pitching of junior Boone Heston and sophomore Adam Paavola. The Bears also split a doubleheader with Doniphan West March 29 as the Bears won the opener, 7-3, but lost the second game, 12-10.

The Bulldogs softball team blanked the Oskaloosa team twice in two games with wins of 6-0 and 12-0.

Eleven countians named to all-DVL basketball

Eleven county high school basketball players were recently selected to the all-Delaware Valley League basketball teams.

Among girls, McLouth freshman Missy Rome and Oskaloosa sophomore Nicole Rockhold were unanimous first-team selections; Valley Falls junior Rebekah Bunde and Jefferson County North freshman Mallory Grand Pre were first-team selections; and Valley Falls senior Katie Brevitz and Oskaloosa senior Carol Allen received honorable mention.

JCN senior Wes Weishaar and Oskaloosa junior Brock McGinnis were unanimous first-team selections on the boys’ side while JCN senior Drew Kraxner and McLouth senior Andrew Booth were also first-team picks. McLouth senior Trevor Keling received honorable mention.

OKWC places two at district, state events

The Oskaloosa Kids Wrestling Club recently had eight members attend districts in Ottawa on March 10.

Two came home with placement medals and advanced to state – Kyle Hopkins in the 8 U 73-lb. weight division and Justin Cross 8 U 95-lb. weight division. Participation recognition went to Dusty Bammes, Tegan Bowers, Dalton VanHoutan, Ben Harvey, Triston Hopkins and Shane Adams.

OKWC had eight members attend the 6 and Under State Competition on March 11. Two came home with placement medals. Brandon Pentlin in the 6U 88-lb. weight division and Zach Harvey in the 6 U 70-lb. weight division. Participation recognition went to Easton Weems, Thaine Berends, Jerod Shufflebarger, Triston Hopkins, Jaxson Webb and Jared Miller.

OKWC wrestlers attend tourneys

Wrestlers from the Oskaloosa Kids Wrestling Club competed in several events in recent weeks.

On March 3, four wrestlers traveled to Wichita to compete in the Park City Classics – Dusty Bammes, Dalton VanHoutan, Tegan Bowers and Justin Cross. VanHoutan took third in the 8U 73-lb. weight division and Cross took second in the 8U 95-lb. weight division.


At Burlington, also on March 3, Triston Hopkins placed first and Easton Weems placed third. At Effingham, also on March 3, Jared Miller and Dakota Cop placed first, Jerrod Shufflebarger, Carter Claxton and Brandon Pentlin placed third and Toby Berends and Mark Nickels placed fourth. Participation recognition at Effingham went to Thaine Berends, Nicholas Courtney and Jason Warden.


OKWC had 15 wrestlers participate in the sub districts tournament at Holton on Saturday. Nine wrestlers will move onto districts next week in Ottawa. Dalton VanHoutan took first in the 8U 73-lb. class. Second place winners were Kyle Hopkins in the 8U 73-lb. class, Justin Cross in the 8U 95-lb. class, and Shane Adams in the 10U 64-lb. class. Third place winners were Triston Hopkins in the 8U 49-lb. class, Ben Harvey in the 8U 80-lb. class, and Tegan Bowers in the 8U 95-lb. class. Fourth place winners were Kelsey Willits in the 10U 64-lb. class and Dusty Bammes in the 10U 67-lb. class. Participation recognition also went to Nicholas Courtney, Carter Claxton, Jared Miller, Dillion Grother, Mark Nickels and Adam Engelken.
