Basketball update for Jan. 23 games

Tuesday’s games (Jan. 23)
Girls
Santa Fe Trail 54, Jefferson West 38
• West fell behind by 9 at the half and Trail took off from there to drop the Tigers to 5-9. Sophomore Hayley Hypse scored 11 points and freshman Brianna Ploude scored 10 in the loss.

JCN Tourney
First round
Oskaloosa 60, Perry-Lecompton 49
• Oskaloosa avenged a 20-point loss from Jan. 16 as the Bears took a 6-point halftime lead and stretched it to double digits in the second half. The Bears moved to 5-4 and Perry-Lecompton fell to 3-10. Three Bears were in double figures led by sophomore Nicole Rockhold with 17. Junior Myla Heston added 15 points and senior Carol Allen scored 12. Perry-Lecompton was led by 20 points from sophomore Emily Huerter. Oskaloosa will play Rossville in the semifinals Friday.

McLouth 50, Maranatha 40
• The Bulldogs took a 28-12 halftime lead and held off the Eagles in the second half to move to 5-5. Freshman Missy Rome scored 16 points and senior Rachael Thompson added 12 for McLouth. McLouth will play ACCHS in Friday’s semifinals.

Rossville 46, JCN 30
• The Chargers fell behind by 13 at halftime and couldn’t get back in the game as Rossville dropped them into the consolation bracket at 3-8. Sophomore Devin Gigstad led the Chargers with 12 points. They will play Perry-Lecompton in Friday’s consolation semis.

ACCHS 56, Valley Falls 15
• The Dragons found themselves down, 29-4, at halftime after being shut out in the second quarter as the Tigers went on to drop them to 3-8. Junior Rebekah Bunde scored 4 points to lead Valley Falls. Valley Falls will play Maranatha in Friday’s consolation semis.

Boys
Perry-Lecompton 58, Oskaloosa 32
• Perry-Lecompton ran its winning streak to six games by drubbing the Bears. The Kaws were up, 33-16, at halftime and pulled away in the third quarter to move to 9-5. Oskaloosa dropped to 2-9. Sophomore Joel Gantz led PLHS with 17 points while sophomore Shane Gimzo and senior Brian Hastert added 10 points each. Junior Brock McGinnis led the Bears with 17 points.

Jefferson West 47, Santa Fe Trail 33
• West took a 9-point halftime lead en route to the 14-point win to move to 6-7. Junior Tom Shirley and senior Derek Helton led the Tigers with 15 points each.
