Hoops recaps from games of Jan. 9 (updated 1/11)

Girls
Oskaloosa 39, Valley Falls 24
• The Bears led, 9-5, after one quarter and didn’t look back in moving to 4-3. The Dragons dropped to 2-7. Sophomore Nicole Rockhold and senior Lindsey Ottensmeier led Oskaloosa with 10 points each. Junior Rebekah Bunde led Valley Falls with 7 points.

Jefferson West 49, Maur Hill 30
• The Tigers ran to a 27-19 halftime lead and pulled away in the second half to move to 4-5. Sophomore Hayley Hypse scored 13 points and junior Nichelle Palmateer added 11 for West.

Troy 42, JCN 21
• The Chargers dropped to 3-5 with the loss at Troy. Freshman Mallory Grand Pre and sophomore Christina Kirby led JCN with 4 points each.

Wathena 48, McLouth 35
• A 14-3 advantage in the second quarter propelled Wathena to the win and helped drop McLouth to 2-5. Freshmen Kylie Shufflebarger and Missy Rome led the Bulldogs with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Tonganoxie 65, Perry-Lecompton 26
• The Kaws were down 9 after one quarter and didn’t get any closer in dropping to 1-7. Junior Katie Davis led Perry-Lecompton with 7 points.


Boys
JCN 48, Troy 45
• The Chargers got a nice road win as they came back from a 3-point halftime deficit to tie the game going into the fourth quarter and won by 3 to move to 5-2. Senior Wes Weishaar led JCN with 23 points and senior Drew Kraxner added 13 in the win.

Wathena 58, McLouth 48
• The Bulldogs dropped to 3-4 with the loss. Senior Lance Lamborn had 15 points while senior Trevor Keling scored 11 for McLouth.

Maur Hill 54, Jefferson West 26
• Maur Hill built a 7-point lead after one quarter and coasted from there to the 28-point win to drop West to 3-5. Junior Tom Shirley paced the Tigers with 13 points.

Perry-Lecompton 66, Tonganoxie 47
• The Kaws had only a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter but pounded the previously undefeated Chieftains in the fourth quarter to move to 3-5. Sophomores Kyle Morgison and Joel Gantz scored 20 points each while senior Brian Hastert scored 12 points to lead the Kaws.

Oskaloosa 41, Valley Falls 39
• In a matchup of two winless teams, the game was tied after each of the first three quarters before Oskaloosa pulled out the narrow win to move to 1-6. Valley Falls fell to 0-8. Juniors Brock McGinnis and Boone Heston scored 8 points each to lead the Bears while sophomore Jake Massey scored 12 points, senior Daniel Nottingham scored 11 and sophomore Josh Kearney scored 10 points for the Dragons.
