Hoops recaps Jan 2-8

Tuesday’s games (Jan. 2)
Girls
Bishop Ward 61, Perry-Lecompton 46
• Ward had only a 3-point halftime lead but pulled away in the third quarter before taking the 15-point win to drop the Kaws to 1-5. Senior Laura Smith and sophomore Emily Huerter led the Kaws with 9 points each.


Wednesday’s games (Jan. 3)
Boys
Mill Valley 61, Perry-Lecompton 38
• The Kaws faced a 10-point deficit after one quarter but cut it to 7 by halftime before watching Mill Valley pull away in the second half. The Kaws dropped to 2-4. Sophomore Kyle Morgison scored 13 points to lead Perry-Lecompton.


Friday’s games (Jan. 5)
Girls
Sabetha 46, Jefferson West 28
• Sabetha inched away to some extent each quarter in dropping West to 3-5. Sophomore Hayley Hypse scored 8 points to lead the Tigers.

JCN 30, McLouth 26
• The teams were tied at halftime and JCN held a 1-point lead entering the fourth quarter before McLouth stormed back to take a 5-point lead with less than 5 minutes left. From there, the Chargers ended the game on a 13-4 run to take the 30-26 win and improve to 3-4. McLouth dropped to 2-4. Freshman Sara Navinskey came off the bench to lead JCN with 7 points while freshman Missy Rome led McLouth with 10 points.

Pleasant Ridge 28, Valley Falls 25
• The loss dropped Valley Falls to 2-6.

Oskaloosa 45, Troy 41
• A 9-point lead for the Bears entering the second quarter dwindled to 2 entering the fourth quarter but Oskaloosa came away with the win to move to 2-3. Junior Emily Heston led three Bears in double figures in scoring with 12 points followed by senior Carol Allen with 11 and sophomore Nicole Rockhold with 10.

Basehor-Linwood 53, Perry-Lecompton 19
• Basehor-Linwood didn’t allow more than 6 points in a quarter to the Kaws as Perry-Lecompton dropped to 1-6. Junior Jamie Fuller led the Kaws with 6 points.

Boys

JCN 41, McLouth 28
• The score didn’t indicate the competitiveness of the game as JCN fought through foul trouble to seniors Wes Weishaar and Drew Kraxner to blow open a 4-point lead entering the fourth quarter. The Chargers are 4-2 while McLouth is 3-3. Weishaar led the Chargers with 20 and junior Mark Stewart led McLouth with 9 points.

Sabetha 58, Jefferson West 31
• Sabetha pulled away from an 8-point halftime lead to cruise to the win and drop West to 3-4. Junior Tom Shirley scored 12 points while senior Brock Anderson scored 11 to lead the Tigers.

Basehor-Linwood 57, Perry-Lecompton 43
• Basehor-Linwood ran up a 21-point lead entering the fourth quarter before the Kaws trimmed it to 14 in dropping to 2-5. Morgison scored 13 points and sophomore Andy Bowman added 11 in the loss.

Troy 58, Oskaloosa 48
• The Bears remained winless as Troy held a 25-point lead at one point in the game before Oskaloosa cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter. The Bears are 0-5. Junior Brock McGinnis scored 13 points while sophomore J.T. Thurston scored 12 in the losing effort.

Pleasant Ridge 71, Valley Falls 52
• The Dragons fell behind after the first quarter and Ridge didn’t look back in winning by 19 to keep Valley Falls winless at 0-7. Four Dragons were in double figures led by sophomore Ray Cook with 13 points, sophomore Jake Massey with 12, senior Daniel Nottingham with 11 and junior Cameron Bickford with 10 points.


Monday’s games (Jan. 8)
Girls
Oskaloosa 42, Cair Paravel 26
• The Bears were up, 26-8, at the half and coasted to the win to move to 3-3. Heston scored 11 points and Rockhold added 10 for Oskaloosa.

Boys
Cair Paravel 58, Oskaloosa 44
• Oskaloosa took a 4-point lead into the locker room at the half but got outscored, 36-18, in the second half to lose by 14 and drop to 0-6. McGinnis led the Bears with 22 points.
