JWHS cross-country teams place third
The Jefferson West High School cross-country teams recently placed third in both boys’ and girls’ competition at the Sabetha Invitational.
The varsity boys had one of their best group showings in several years with a cluster of five Tigers coming across the finish line one right after the other. Leading the varsity boys were seniors Tim Wellman, Blake Ross, Lucas Hothan and Eric Renna along with sophomores Trey Bruton and Matt Anderson and freshman Tanner Clark. Freshman Taryn Brees again led the Tiger varsity girls, finishing second. Also earning varsity medals were juniors Heather Wright and Ashley Eckhardt, sophomore Erika Herring, and freshmen Marissa Wright and Ellen Zirkel.
JV boys medals were earned by sophomore Colby Ketron plus freshmen Daniel Sayles and Tyler Hollimon. JV girls medal winners included seniors Marcia Beecham, Stephanie Wilson and Emma Brink. Jeff West returns to Sabetha Thursday for the Big Seven League meet.
JCN runners second at Centralia invite
The Jefferson County North cross-country teams recently finished second at a meet in Centralia.
Medalists for North were Spencer Wilson, sixth, fastest senior runner; Riley Noll, seventh; Dalton Speer, 13th; Matt Finley, 15th; Gavin Trexler, 18th; Jon Peres, 19th; Scott Noll, 22nd; and Landon Noll, 25th. Medalists for the North girls were Sara Polson in 15th and Lincoln Kingman in 20th.
PLHS runners compete at Eudora
The Perry-Lecompton High School cross-country teams competed recently at Eudora with the girls’ team placing second.
The girls were led by a third-place finish from Katie Hirsch in 17:06. Maggie Kuhlman was 10th, Kerry Neil was 25th, Chelsea Cooley was 28th, Belai Mills was 34th, Tayler Blodgett was 41st, Sydney Allen was 50th and Katie Beckwith was 52nd.
The boys’ team placed seventh and was paced by an eighth-place finish from Garrett Jones in 18:26. Josh Payne was 16th, Philip Hinman was 25th, Ethan Merritt was 37th, Lance Morris-Bohannan was 56th, Josh Hurst was 63rd, Gage McMullin was 64th, Michael Mallonee was 68th and Cody Nichols was 72nd.
The Kaws play host the Kaw Valley League meet at 4 p.m. Thursday.
West golfers on a roll
The Jefferson West High School girls’ golf team recently placed third and second in tournaments in Topeka and St. Marys, respectively. At the Silver Lake Invitational in North Topeka, Becca Cozadd was second and Abbey Deiter was fifth. At St. Marys, Cozadd was second, Brainard was eighth, Kyane Stortzum was 12th and Tana Kern was 13th. Karly Kennedy also competed for West.
