Week 5 games (Sept. 28)
Perry-Lecompton 14, Bishop Ward 3
• The Kaws moved to 4-1 as they held Ward to a third-quarter field goal and got touchdowns from junior Mark Higgins on a 67-yard run and a 57-yard pass from junior Shane Gimzo. Junior Neng Artwichai added two extra-point kicks.
Horton 35, Valley Falls 6
• The Dragons dropped to 3-2 as Horton had four 50-yard rushers propel them to a 21-0 halftime lead. Valley Falls’ only score came on a 9-yard run by junior Josh Kearney in the third quarter. Kearney had 14 rushes for 41 yards in the loss.
Troy 47, Oskaloosa 14
• The Bears dropped to 3-2 with their second straight loss as Troy took a 26-6 halftime lead and scored 21 points in the third quarter to put it away. Oskaloosa scored on an 18-yard run from senior Brandon Hawks and an 8-yard pass from freshman Adam Bowser to senior Boone Heston. Junior Trent Newell added a 2-point conversion run.
Holton 42, Jefferson West 0
• Holton took a 28-0 halftime lead as they shut down the Tigers to drop West to 2-3.
McLouth 21, Jackson Heights 20
• The Bulldogs scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to get a comeback win for their first of the season to move to 1-4. The Cobras had an 8-0 lead at halftime but McLouth senior Mark Stewart scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter and added a 2-point conversion run to tie the game. The Cobras scored to regain the lead but Stewart scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth to retie it. After the Cobras took a 20-14 lead on a touchdown, Stewart cashed in on a 2-yard run to tie it and the Phillip Wnuck extra-point kick won it for the ’Dogs. Stewart ran 18 times for 128 yards and 3 TDs while senior Ryan Smith ran 20 times for 94 yards in the win.
Wathena 36, JCN 7
• JCN fell to 0-5 as Wathena scored 14 unanswered second-half points to pull away for the win. North’s only score came on an 80-yard kickoff return by senior Abe Noll. Senior Vince Foulk added the extra-point kick.
CORRECTION
Last week’s summary of the McLouth-Valley Falls game left out that the Dragons scored a safety on a play by Cameron Bickford and Jordan Busey. Another 2-point conversion that was reported successful for the Dragons actually failed.
